Lecture Series: Empirical Approaches to Literature - Chances and Challenges
This lecture series, which took place in the winter term 2019/2020 explored the range of options of empirical approaches to literature, and discussed the chances provided by, as well as the challenges inherent in, the methods of empirical studies in the humanities. An international line-up of experts from the fields of (cognitive) literary studies, stylistics, psychology, and linguistics from the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany presented and discussed theoretical approaches, methods, and sample studies.
The lectures covered a variety of topics of central relevance to cognitive and empirical literary studies, including emotions during reading, perspective taking, experientiality and absorption, mental simulation, variation in language use, and corpus analysis. This lecture series continued the tradition of the ArtCogLit lecture series and launched the activities of the newly founded Aachen Center for Cognitive and Empirical Literary Studies (ACCELS).
