Kai Tan ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der RWTH Aachen. Sie erhielt ihren Bachelorabschluss in Philosophie und englischer Literatur an der National University of Singapore. Während ihres Bachelorstudiums verbrachte sie ein Jahr als Austauschstudentin an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Nach ihrem Abschluss arbeitete Kai Tan fünf Jahre lang als civil servant, vor allem im Bereich des Projekt- und Eventmanagements, bevor sie 2013 an die Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg zurückkehrte, um dort ihren Masterabschluss zu machen. 2016 erhielt sie ihren Master of Arts in Literary Theory and English Literatures. Ihre Abschlussarbeit "(T)Here is the City: Locating the Liminal London in Contemporary British Novels" wurde mit dem Alumni Award durch die Kommission der Philologischen Fakultät an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg ausgezeichnet.

Während ihres Studiums war Kai Tan studentische Hilfskraft am Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) und assistierte in der Forschung für das DFG-Projekt FA 2153/1-1 "CCTV beyond Surveillance" unter der Leitung von Dr. Nicole Falkenhayner am Englischen Seminar der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Kai Tan unterrichtet englische Literatur an der RWTH Aachen und forscht an ihrer Dissertation über den psychogeographical reader als eine Form des embodied reader. Neben Psychogeography, Urban Studies und Soziologie umfassen ihre Forschungsinteressen zeitgenössische britische Literatur sowie britische Literatur des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts, kognitive Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften, empirische Literaturwissenschaft und das Genre sowie die Effekte britischer Komödien.
