Ralf Schneider studierte Anglistik, Romanistik (Spanisch und Italienisch) und Pädagogik an der Universität zu Köln, wo er 1999 promoviert wurde. Er habilitierte sich 2004 an der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg i.Br. Von 2005 bis 2019 war er Professor für Literatur und Kultur Großbritanniens an der Universität Bielefeld. Im Frühjahr 2019 wurde er auf den Lehrstuhl für Anglistische Literaturwissenschaft am Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Romanistik (IfAAR) der RWTH Aachen University berufen und initiierte das Aachen Center for Cognitive and Empirical Literary Studies (ACCELS).

Seine Forschungstätigkeiten und Publikationen umfassen mehrere Bereiche der britischen Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft, z.B. das Verhältnis von Krieg und Literatur, literarische Darstellungen von Männlichkeit, Migration und Literatur sowie literarische Kindheitskonstruktionen. Zentrale Bereiche sind die kognitive Narratologie und die kognitive Rezeptionstheorie.
